巴納特 Banat: Novi Sad/Serbia, Timisoara/Romania

I combined the cities of 2 different countries in a post because, historically, they belonged to Banat region which is part of Pannonian Basin, bordered by River Danube to the south, River Tisa to the west, River Mureș to the north, and Southern Carpathian Mountains to the east. This area had been ruled by Roman Empire, Goths, Huns, Avars, Bulgarian Empire, Hungary Kingdom, Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy. Its historical capital was Timișoara.

Novi Sad (means "New Plant") is an interesting mix of Serbian and Austro-Hungarian cultures, nestled on the Danube, located in the southern part of the Pannonian Plain. It is the capital of Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. There are some 26 ethnic groups in the province. Bordering the south bank of the Danube river, Petrovaradin Fortress, nicknamed "Gibraltar of the Danube", was built by Celts (4th century BC) and Romans (1st century BC).

From Serbia we crossed the border into Romania and arrived in Timisoara, a vibrant city on the Bega River. Beginning in 1443, John Hunyadi used Timișoara as a military stronghold against the Turks, having built a powerful fortress and the city was repeatedly besieged by the Ottomans. In September 2016, Timișoara was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2021.
